Piling support being drilled

Passing by the other day, we saw one of the piling locations being drilled. The device swings quite a bit during the drilling, which surprised us. Dirt being caught up in the rotating screw threads rises to the top and begins to fly off at higher elevations.

The whole things is a bit like a corkscrew for a wine bottle. They place the screw bit in the ground, begin to turn it. The framework around it then comes down and eventually sticks in the ground securely. At that point, the drill continues to go down into the ground and the displaced dirt comes up and out just above the surface.

The earth coming up from the drilling begins to turn a darker color at greater depths.

  • These pictures are really great! I remember watching an apartment building going up across the street (Riddle Rd.) in the ’60s, when I was very young. It’s so interesting to watch a project take shape day by day. Now I can do the same thing with a few clicks of a mouse from my office, miles away.
    Amazing!!

  • Thanks Jerry for your kind words.

We’ll try and keep the pictures coming. Hopefully, by next year we’ll start to see some real infrastructure going up.
