The Alternative

Taken today off the Roebling Suspension bridge, this encampment of men is just at the foot of the Paul Brown Stadium. When people complain about the Riverfront development downtown, we think about the alternative. Would you prefer this encampment be the only thing people coming to Northern Kentucky and Cincinnati see?

Funny thing is, its been occupied for months.
One evening walking back from dinner in Covington, there were about 10 - 15 people down there, a bonfire raging, radio blasting, dancing. I actually wanted to join them, it looked like fun.

Seems like it’s been occupied for years, save when the water’s too high.
My opinion of the campout changed last year when we had to call the fire department during a walk to Covington because that rocking bonfire had become a full-fledged riverfront forest-fire engulfing about 5 trees. The people from the camp came out yelling for help, but I couldn’t help wondering whether it would be better in the long run to call the fire department or the homeless coalition. I felt like a conflicted Mr. Spock trying to decide between Human empathy and Vulcan logic.
It’s similar to the way I feel about pan handling. Give a man a fish (or dollar) and he’ll like you but he’ll be back tomorrow asking for more fish (or dollars). Teach a man to fish (make his own dollars), and he’ll resent you most likely, but also potentially learn to eat for a lifetime.
