We’re starting a new post series called “what the heck is it?,” where we’d like you to tell us what we’re looking at. For the inaugural question, the photo below looks to be some kind of drainage protection. If you know what the heck it is and what its purpose is, go ahead and comment.   • Its a snake! Oh waitta minute….Those are my dress socks!

  • As a frugal (and subsequently eco-friendly) act, my mom used to reuse old knee-high panty hose to filter the gunk out of the utility sink in the basement.

    After a few weeks, it would start to look a lot like this thingamajig: bloated, foamy, and way discolored.

  • I think you’re right on the money about the snake. It would be used to soak up oil before it goes into the drainage system or to stop soil and other debris from dropping into the drain.
